All-Electric 2024 Chevy Blazer- Worth Buying?

Chevy’s 2024 All-Electric Blazer

Late last year, Chevy announced the all-electric 2024 Chevy Blazer and aside from how it looks- I wanted to do some research on it and see how it compares to the competitors. I was actually a huge fan of the old-style Chevy Blazers and even Trailblazers after them. That’s why I chose to look at the electric Chevy Blazer instead of the electric Chevy Equinox which is expected to start selling fall of ‘23.

The release of the ‘24 Chevy Blazer EV is expected late summer of 2023. The EV market is getting ultra-competitive. Where will the ‘24 Chevy Blazer stand versus other EV’s, especially Tesla which has years of sales and experience in the EV market already.

In this post, I’m going to pull together everything we know about the 2024 Blazer and see how it fares versus Tesla models and the other competitors in the fully-electric market. With GM planning to sell one million electric vehicles in North America by 2025, things are about to get interesting.

’24 Electric Blazer: What do we Know?

Remember the old Chevy Blazer K1500 and then the 90’s-mid 2000’s Blazer and it’s counterpart in the GMC Jimmy? Well, simply put the 2024 Chevy Blazer isn’t much like any of those older models. It’s not going to come with a 4.3 liter gas-guzzling little engine or a 5.3 liter gas- demolishing engine.

This Chevy Blazer EV is going to be considered a crossover and it will be nothing like the Blazers of the 90’s and early 2000’s.

Chevy’s 2024 Blazer Will be Fully Electric

Model year 2024 fully electric Chevy Blazer
You can see the 2024 Chevy Blazer is sleek and stylish but can it perform well with an electric motor versus gasoline?

Sticking with the latest automotive trend and the main focus of auto manufacturing for the foreseeable future, Chevy is going all-electric with the ‘24 Blazer. Instead of a direct-injected turbocharged gasoline engine that Chevy has been using in recent years, they will use a fully-electric motor.

Chevy says that it’s highest trim package, the SS model will offer up to 557 HP and 0-60 acceleration in under four seconds while in “wide-open watts” mode. It will also be available in a Police Pursuit (PPV) version according to General Motors.

What’s the Range? How Many Miles Will a ‘24 Blazer Get?

When determining which electric car to buy- if you are buying an electric car obviously- range is one of the most important numbers to pay attention to. How many miles the ‘24 Chevy Blazer gets on a single charge will obviously depend on many conditions such as temperature, wind conditions, usage of accessories, etc. like any other Electric Vehicle.

Chevrolet claims that under normal operating conditions, the SS version of the ‘24 Blazer will achieve “up to” 290 miles. Some of the electric Blazer’s trim packages can achieve up to 320 miles of range on a charge, according to Chevy.

What are Charging Capabilities of the ‘24 Chevy Blazer EV?

Right up there with how much range the Blazer EV can get is the charging capabilities of the ‘24 Chevy Blazer. According to Chevy, the EV version of the Blazer offers 11.5 KWh of Level 2 (AC) charging for home-use chargers and it also can use DCFS chargers like the public ones available.

When hooked up to a Direct-Current Fast Charger, the Blazer can achieve up to 190 kWh of charging. At that level, you could add approximately 78 miles of range in 10 minutes. I’m sure that number would be slower using an AC charger like the Autel HomeSmart 50-amp EV charger, but they make great options for at-home charging.

In this picture, the car is being charged by a DCFC charge point. In many areas of the country, EV charging stations aren’t available yet.

Charging capabilities are one of the most often misunderstood aspects of electric-vehicles. For that reason, I encourage you to do some research on the different levels of charging for EV’s.

Does the ‘24 Blazer Offer any Self-Driving Features?
Interior look at the 2004 Chevy Blazer EV
Here you can get a look at the interior of the Chevy Blazer EV.

Its important when considering any new vehicle in 2023 whether electric or combustion to ask what kind of self-driving features it offers. With AI improving every day, there are new features being added to vehicles every model year, making them more autonomous.

Chevys ‘24 Blazer will come with Super-Cruise which is Chevy’s version of self-driving similar to Tesla’s FSD but with far less functions. With Super Cruise, GM has been cautious about adding new features. As it stands now, Super Cruise is basically cruise control with lane-assist and centering on approved streets. So far GM seems to be introducing self-driving features cautiously.

What Safety Features Does the EV Blazer Come With?

Obviously any new car buyer is going to want to know what safety features the electric Chevy Blazer comes with. According to Chevy, the ‘24 fully-electric Blazer comes with all of its standard safety features like the following.

  1. Forward collision alert
  2. Lane-keep assist
  3. Intellibeam
  4. Front Pedestrian Braking
  5. Automatic Emergency Braking

There are a few more that Chevy promotes on the 2024 Electric Blazer, but essentially it’s all the same stuff Chevy has been using for a while. I wasn’t able to find the safety rating for a 2024 Blazer, so in terms of overall safety we don’t know yet.

Is the ‘24 Chevy Blazer a 4×4?

What’s a Chevy Blazer without four-wheel drive right? According to its official website, GM says the ‘24 Chevy Blazer EV will come in front, rear and All-Wheel drive configurations. So there won’t be a typical 4×4 option that allows you to toggle between High, Low and 2WD but the Blazer will be available in AWD.

You won’t be doing any mud-bogging with the ‘24 Blazer (or any other EV unfortunately) but it does offer an option for drivers in snowy climates like myself up by Canada.

Whats the Starting Price for a 2024 EV Blazer?

For a Base Model 1LT 2024 Blazer the price as of right now is 49,995. If you want the SS model of Chevy Blazer EV in 2024, you’re gonna shell out around $65,995. There are models in between like the 2LT that cost less also so lower trim packages would be something to consider.

GM also has four other fully electric models if the Blazer isn’t for you but you are set on a fully electric vehicle. There is the GMC Hummer EV. Cadillac LYRIQ, Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV which is an “electric utility vehicle” according to Chevy.

Can I Get a Tax Credit for the ‘24 Chevy Blazer?

Finding out if your EV qualifies for any tax credits can be complicated. According to this post, the ‘24 Blazer would be eligible after January 1st of 2023 but it’s still questionable from what I can see. Also, released just today actually from Reuters, the IRS is giving tax credits for some electric vehicles up to $80,000.

Conclusion- Chevy’s 2024 Blazer EV Seems a Good Choice

After researching everything for this post and looking into the details about the new ‘24 Blazer EV, I’ve concluded that it is no better or worse option than other EV’s on the market.

It remains to be seen how well GM and other legacy auto companies can compete with Tesla, the company that made electric cars a thing in 2023. A discussion about the pro’s and con’s between legacy and electric is for another post entirely.
